Iraq has taken a major step toward sustainable energy with a $497 million agreement with China’s Shanghai SUS Environment Co. Ltd to construct the country’s first waste-to-energy facility.

The project, located in the Nahrawan area of Baghdad, will process 3,000 tons of garbage daily and generate 100 MW of electricity.

According to the National Investment Commission (NIC), construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with completion expected within two years. The initiative is a collaborative effort between Iraq’s Ministries of Electricity, Environment, Science, and Technology, along with the Baghdad Municipality.

This project marks a significant milestone in Iraq’s energy transition, addressing both waste management and power generation challenges.

SUS Environment, founded in 2008, is a global leader in integrated environmental and energy solutions, committed to sustainable development.
